Last week we went to the Pantages in Hollywood and saw Riverdance, which is on it’s 20th anniversary tour. I realize that someone is going to come knocking on my door and take away my Person of Colour membership ID when I say this, but I don’t care: I FUCKING LOVE RIVERDANCE. I saw it probably about 18 or 19 years ago. All through college it was the cast recording I’d listen to while reading or writing. I don’t quite know what it is that I love so much, but now that I think about it I’m able to pinpoint a few things. For me, there is something very calming in the precision. Maybe it’s soothing to my OCD, I don’t know. I’m also just so impressed by the talent and dedication to this form of dance, something that I don’t think had extremely wide international exposure until the advent of this show. Cole pointed out that some of the cast of this 20th anniversary tour probably had parents who saw the original show and then put them into Irish dance classes. I would not be surprised if this were true. If you are like Cole (prior to seeing this show), you may not know anything about Riverdance other than it being a punchline and if so, I am sad for you. It’s a really wonderful, beautiful, energizing show.
